MARCH, Ausias (c.1397-c.1459). Las obras. Valladolid: Sebastian Martinez, 20 February 1555. 8° (135 x 87mm). Woodcut arms on title, woodcut initials. (Title repaired in the inside margin, a few repaired tears.) Red morocco by Brugalla, 1944, gilt supralibros, gilt spine lettering, turn-ins and edges. Provenance: purchased from José Porter, 1941.
An early edition of March's poetry. On-line ABPC records just one sale of this edition which realised £950 hammer in 1994. Ausias March was a Valencian knight of Catalan origin, and the first Spanish translator of Homer. The greater number of his 'Love Songs', deriving from Provençal tradition but written in Catalan, were dedicated to Teresa Bon, who, in death, inspired his later 'Songs of Death'. Here edited, with an extensive vocabulary, by Juan de Resa, chaplain to Philip II. The first edition (Valencia, Juan Navarro, 1539) was bilingual. Salvá I, 769; Palau VIII, 151297.
