Although Portuguese, Montemayor wrote prose and verse almost exclusively in Spanish. His best known work is La Diana, published in 1559 and regarded as Spain's first pastoral novel. All early editions of the Segundo cancionero are rare. No sale record found since that of the Antwerp, 1558 edition in the Peeters-Fontainas sale, 1978. Salvá I, 297; Palau X, 177937.
