MORE, Thomas (1478-1535). Epigrammata. Edited by Beatus Rhenanus. Basel: Johann Froben, December 1520. 4° (204 x 148mm). Roman and Greek types, woodcut historiated title border, printer's device at end, historiated initials. (Minor repairs to title with minor effect on border and one letter, some faint spotting.) Blue morocco by Brugalla, 1947, gilt supralibros within blind-tooled ornament, spine lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (spine very light sunned). Provenance: purchased from José Porter, 1952.
FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, ESTABLISHING THE AUTHORIAL TEXT AND AUGMENTED WITH 11 NEW POEMS. It follows two editions printed by Froben in 1518 for whose errors he apologised to More, promising to reprint it more carefully. More himself revised the text, omitted two poems (one on political grounds) and added eleven new ones, including 4 personal poems. More's modern editor considers these personal poems as "priceless documents of More's private character" (Complete Works, 1984, III, pt. 2, p.9). The 1520 edition formed the basis for subsequent editions, including the modern Yale edition. Adams M-1753; Gibson 57; VD-16 M-6296.
