FLORESTA, Pedro de la, pseudonym of OLIVEROS DE CASTILLA. La Historia de los mui nobles y valientes caballeros Oliveros de Castilla, y Artus de Algarve, y de sus maravillosas, y grandes hazannas. Madrid: [c.1700]. 8° (144 x 93mm). Half-title. (Occasional very faint spotting.) Mid-late 19th-century green morocco by Belz-Niedrée, gilt spine, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges marbled under gilt, green silk ribbon marker. Provenance: Bibliothèque de Mello (gilt arms to covers) -- purchased from Antonio Creus, 1946.
FINE COPY OF AN EXTREMELY SCARCE ROMANCE OF CHIVALRY with splendid provenance. The library at Château de Mello had its foundations back in the ninth century, and was bought in 1819 by François-Alexandre Seillière, later Baron de Mello, French industrialist, art and book collector. His son, Achille (1813-1887) greatly augmented the collections which in turn were inherited by his sons Nicolas (d. 1887) and François-Florentin-Achille (d. 1890). Jean Philippe Belz (1831-1917) was one of the great 19th-century finishers. He entered Niedrée's atelier in 1854, and after the latter's death in 1864, continued to work under their combined names until retiring in 1880. ONLY ONE COPY CAN BE TRACED IN AN INSTITUTIONAL LIBRARY at Stuttgart. Worldcat suggests another two are held at the National Library of Scotland and in Freiburg, but close examination of their on-line catalogues suggest both are in fact later 18th-century editions. Palau XI, 200857 note.
