Lot Essay
This figure is stylistically similar to a wood figure of a Buddhist monk of smaller size (21.65 in. high), dated 16th or 17th century, illustrated by O. Sirén in Chinese Sculpture in the von der Heydt Collection, Museum Reitberg, Zurich, 1959, pp. 166-67, no. 65. The facial features, and the knobby protrubence on the head are quite similar, and although the robes are of a different type, the manner in which they are carved is also quite similiar.
