AN UNUSUAL GILT REPOUSSE COPPER FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The bodhisattva is shown seated in lalitasana atop a lotus base, holding the stem of a lotus supporting a vase in the right hand, the left hand in varada mudra atop the left knee, and wearing layered robes and beaded jewelry and a separate crown that encircles a cloth draped over the high chignon. The figure is raised on a separate pedestal base, where a recumbent lion is placed between the stepped lower section of the base and the upper platform that is hollowed to accomodate the bottom of the figure. The figure has traces of blue and red pigment
