Lot Essay

These two paintings of sea creatures provide an engaging comparison of similarities and differences between the works of Qi Baishi and Ding Yanyong. Both men clearly sought a bold visual effect through rich ink tones and vibrant brushstrokes. Following the practice of their great source of inspiration, Bada Shanren (1626-1705), they heightened the dramatic impact of their subjects by emptying out all background and context. Few Chinese artists used humor and bright color as effectively as did Qi and Ding. However, Ding Yanyong's calligraphy and compositions reveal his other sources of inspiration. Specifically, the rich play of shapes, strokes, and tones in his painting of fish echo the works of Henri Matisse (1869-1954), just as his painting of Amitabha (lot 1333) recalls Japanese Zen depictions of Daruma.
