Lot Essay

Huang Junbi was especially known for his landscape paintings filled with billowing mists and powerful waterfalls. In his inscription he describes how the clouds and water in this painting are bottomless and how the autumn clouds are thin as gauze. He notes that his inspiration comes from White Cloud Mountain in his home province of Guangdong, which also provided the name of his studio. He concludes with a dedication to Mr. and Mrs. Schonfeld, whom he likely met during one of his many visits to New York. Hildegard Schonfeld's Collection of Snuff Bottles is offered on Thursday, March 21, lots 1101-1117.
