A SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF A LUOHAN
17TH/18TH CENTURY
The figure is shown casually seated and holding a large peach on a leafy stem above his raised right leg. He is dressed in long, loose robes that are incised with foliate decoration and fall in long folds around the body. The dark hair markings are finely incised on the top of the head and on the well-carved face. The ivory-toned stone has scattered ochre and aubergine inclusions, the latter used to highlight the ripe peach. There are traces of pigment.
4 3/8 in. (11 cm.) high, zitan stand
Provenance
Fenley Hunter, New York, acquired early 20th century.
