A BLUE AND WHITE DISH
DAOGUANG BINGWU CYCLICAL DATE (1846) IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE, AND OF THE PERIOD
The dish has shallow rounded sides that flare to a slightly everted rim, and is decorated around the exterior with four characters, shan gao shui chang, each enclosed by a circle of ruyi-heads, and separated from each other by two of the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang) flanking a lotus spray, all between a ruyi-head border above and a petal lappet border below. A shou medallion is in the center of the interior below a ruyi-head border at the rim. Together with a blue and white dish, Qianlong seal mark in underglaze blue and of the peroid (1736-1795), decorated with flower scroll in the center of the interior and as a frieze around the exterior.

Lot Essay

The characters shan gao shui chang may be translated as, 'As high as the mountains, as vast as the seas'.
