8o (143 x 95 mm). Italic type. Wechel's tree device on title-page and last page, 113 emblematic woodcuts of various sizes, with a full-page woodcut at F1v signed with the Mercury mark of artist Jean Jollet, two small woodcut capitals. (Lightly washed, small tear in lower margin B3 mended.) Late 19th-century brown calf, blind-ruled panels, gilt device in center of both covers, spine gilt, edges gilt, by Capé (very minor rubbing at extremities). Provenance: C.N. Radoulesco (bookplate) -- Acquired from Seven Gables Books, 1977.

SECOND PARIS EDITION, preceded by another Wechel edition of the same date but with alterations in the woodcut at A8r and a different setting of the title-page (see E.F. Bosanquet, "The first Paris edition of the Emblems of Alciati, 1534," in The Library, 4th series, vol.4 (1924), p.[326]-331. A remarkably influential set of emblems which "set the standard for the popular field of emblem literature" (Mortimer).
