4o (201 x 127 mm). Woodcut emblem, engraved portrait of Bocchi and 150 emblematic engravings by Giulio Bonasone; woodcut initials, ALL HAND-COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN ARTIST THROUGHOUT. (Title and preliminaries a little spotted, preliminary leaf *2 bound after *3, F4 with chip on lower margin, some color offset.) 19th-century blue straight-grained morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Bozérian (extremities a little rubbed). Provenance: early Greek inscription on title margin -- Acquired from Librairie Valette, 1972.
FIRST EDITION with engraved emblems by Giulio Bonasone. Bocchi's verses take their subjects from classical mythology and from history, as other emblem books of that time. Some emblems have individual dedications: to Alessandro Farnese, to the Emperor Charles VI, to King Henri II, to Alciati, to Cardinal Pole, to the City of Venice, etc.
Bonasone's superb engravings show his classical taste in composition and in depiction of graceful movement of the human figures and animals. Although most emblems are of Bonasone's own design, there are copies of paintings by Raphael and Parmigianino, and one based on Hieronymus Bosch (p. 270). "Bocchi's private press, established for the printing of his own works and works by members of the Accademia, is distinguished for its careful printing and proofreading" (Mortimer).
