4o (223 x 163 mm). Woodcut border on title, woodcut armorial shields, crests, initials and figures COLORED AND HEIGHTENED IN GOLD BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Two lines of text on H2 abraded with loss of several words, O4 with old marginal repair.) Contemporary calf gilt, covers gilt paneled, lion rampant at center of both sides, large fan and fleur-de-lys ornaments at the corners, edges gilt (rebacked, endpapers renewed). Provenance: Britwell Court Library (sold Sotheby's London, 29 March 1971, lot 235 [part]); acquired from Bernard Quaritch, 1982.
A FINELY ILLUMINATED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Bossewell based much of his heraldic research on that of Gerald Legh, and like Legh he delighted in symbolism and allegory, in conceits and legendary fables. A second edition was printed in 1597. STC 3393.
