CORROZET, Gilles (1510-1568). Icones historiarum veteris testamenti. Lyon: Jean Frellon, 1547.

4o (190 x 127 mm). 94 woodcuts after Hans Holbein, the Younger, by Hans Lützelberger, printed one to a page with Latin text in roman type above and Corrozet's French quatrains in italic type below, 4 medallion woodcuts of the Evangelists at end, two woodcut initials. (Some light marginal darkening, mostly at extremes.) 17th-century vellum. Provenance: Franciscan inscription on front pastedown; two library stamps on title; acquired from Librairie Rousseau-Girard, 1959.
Mortimer's "Second(?) 1547" edition of Corrozet's French translation and the fourth to contain the complete set of 94 woodcuts, first printed by Melchior and Gaspard Trechsel for the brothers Frellon in 1538, and used by them for three folio Latin bibles in 1538, 1544 and 1551. Mortimer mentions there were two editions of the Icones printed by Frellon in 1547, and that although they are often cited as issues, the text was entirely reset. "With the Holbein volumes, Bible illustration at Lyons changed significantly... The Holbein blocks were widely imitated..."(Mortimer, p. 341). Also referred to as first issue (of two) published in the same year.

This copy with an apparently 17th-century graphite drawing of the Washing of Christ's Feet on rear pastedown and a few other small sketches in the margins on B1v and B2v.

Adams B-1963; Brunet III:252; Fairfax Murray French 244 (second issue); Mortimer French 282.
