2o (347 x 236 mm). Engraved title-page, engraved initials, text in Latin. (Title trimmed just touching plate, a few small stains.) Modern red half morocco, edges gilt (light wear to hinges and extremities). Provenance: Olin Lane Merriam (bookplate, ownership inscription in ink on title page); acquired from Chiswick's Bookshop, 1968.
Engraved title-page depicts eminent doctors of ancient Greece, including Galen, Hippocrates, Paulus Aegineta, Oribasius, Asclepiades and Dioscorides. Galen substantially contributed to the Hippocratic understanding of pathology. His principle interest was human anatomy, and among his major contributions to the field of medicine were his work with the circulatory and nervous systems. Influenced by Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics, he also wrote about logic and philosophy. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, no copy of this work has sold in the last 35 years.
