GIOVIO, Paolo (1483-1552). Vitae duodecim vicecomitum Mediolani principum. Paris: Robert Estienne, 1549.
4o (243 x 166 mm). Estienne's basilisk device on title (Renouard 471), 10 woodcut portraits attributed to Jacquemin Woeiriot, foliated initials, one criblé initial. 19th-century polished calf gilt, edges gilt, by N. Marliére, inlaid arms of Archbishop Léopold-Charles de Choiseul-Beaupré (1724-1774), Duke of Cambrai added from an earlier binding (rebacked). Provenance: acquired from Lucien Goldschmidt, 1961.
FIRST EDITION. Though some have attributed the cuts to Geoffroy Tory, Mortimer notes that it "is doubtful that this work was in preparation as early as 1533" and proposes that Jacquemin Woeiriot was the cutter. The woodcut portraits are reduced copies of a manuscript at the Bibliòtheque Nationale. The same cuts were also used for Charles Estienne's French translation in 1552 and were later copied as copper engravings. Adams G-694; Brun p.240; Fairfax Murray French 195; Mortimer French 248; Schreiber Estienne 104.
