GRINGORE, Pierre (ca 1475-ca 1538). Heures de nostre dame, translates de latin en francoys et mises en rhyme, additionnees de plusieurs chantz royaulx. Paris: for Jean Petit, [ca 1540].
Two parts in one volume, 4o (198 x 138 mm). Collation: [A]-B4, a-o4.8 P8; a-h4. Gothic types. Printed in red and black. Cut of the Anatomical Man and 13 woodcuts by Gabriel Salomon in the first part; 7 woodcuts in the second part. (Small stain on f2, short marginal tear on i3.) 19th-century russet morocco, gilt arms of Adolphe Audenet on sides. Provenance: Adolphe Audenet (1800-1872), whose library was sold by Techener in 1872 (binding); Nicholas Yemeniz (bookplate); acquired from Librairie Valette, 1976.
The privilege is dated 25 November 1525 and calendar (A4v) with years 1540-1554. The present edition is apparently unrecorded in the standard bibliographies, the title-page lettering, calendar and date of privilege not noted by Mortimer or in Fairfax Murray. The set of thirteen blocks was designed by Gabriel Salmon for the first edition of Gringore's Heures printed for Petit, ca 1525. The woodcut on m2r of Christ in humanist garb mocked by comedians, suppressed in most earlier editions, has been reemployed in this edition. The seven woodcuts in the second part were made for Petit's first edition of that text, published first as an independent volume in 1527. See Fairfax Murray French 659; Mortimer French 259.
