FIRST EDITION. The sixth-century bureaucrat and historian Jordanes wrote this book as a summary of a multi-volume history of the Goths (now lost) by the statesman Cassiodorus. It is the only extant ancient work dealing with the early history of the Goths. It is considered an important source even in modern times. The second work part is an exemplary edition of Paulus Diaconus' (or Warnefrid, d. 797) important history of the Langobards, first printed in 1471. The editor of both historical sources is the Augsburg town scribe Conrad Peutinger (1465-1547), with his privilege issued by Emperor Maximilian I, dated 1511, printed on title verso. Adams J-320; BM/STC German, p. 463; Brunet III:567; Fairfax Murray German 229; Muther 868; Proctor 10826.
