2o (310 x 208 mm). Title, two leaves of dedication and 206 leaves, 6 folding, (collation irregular but apparently complete), with 412 full-page woodcuts illustrations of horses, bridles and bits, with contemporary manuscript captions in German, perhaps by the publisher; 68 blank leaves (6 leaves from the publisher and 62 from the binder) bound in at end. (Some light dampstaining, short tear to C4, m4, and one folding leaf, a very few leaves trimmed.) Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, brass clasps and catches (minor wear to upper spine end). Provenance: Otto A. Freydenegg Monsello (bookplate); acquired from Lathrop C. Harper, 1974.

FIRST EDITION. One of the most beautiful books illustrating the trappings of caparisoned horses, including 6 large folding plates of horses and their trainers. THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE MASTERPIECES OF GERMAN WOODCUT ORNAMENTS OF THE PERIOD. With its 412 designs this must be one of the largest compilations of its kind. Many of the bits are extremely elaborately designed, as much for decoration as for use, the caption, indicating their purpose and the kind of horse for which they are intended. Manuscript captions, presumably by the publisher, are also found in the copy sold at Christie's (see below) and in a copy offered by E.P. Goldschmidt (catalogue 166 item 32). This first edition was published without text and dedicated to Maximilian. On account of this publication the king called Kreutzberger from Augsburg to Vienna, where an edition with text was published in 1591. See Mayer Wien's Buchdruckergeschichte I, p.186 No. 879. The 68 blank leaves at the end were probably added for additional notes of the book's owner. The only other copy that sold at auction, in the last 35 years was accompanied by 52 leaves of manuscript. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current only one copy sold at auction (Christie's London 24 June 1992, lot 157) in the last 30 years. See Berlin Kat. 1397; Lipperheide Tc7.
