Woodcut-lettered title, 29 woodcuts, including one repeat, Vérard's large woodcut device on verso of last leaf, calligraphic and grotesque initials. (Small wormhole in last four gatherings touching some letters.) Contemporary French blind-tooled calf (rebacked preserving original spine, lacking one clasp). Provenance: Eduardo J. Bullrich (bookplate); C. N. Radoulesco (bookplate); acquired from Bernard M. Rosenthal, 1972.

PRESUMED FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. The cuts include a series of 12 (and one repeat) representing nuns and hermits, evidently executed for this book. There are also seven larger cuts from Ludolphus La grant vita (Vérard, ca 1501) depicting the Marriage at Cana, Mary Magdalen, the Confessional (twice), and other scenes. There are six cuts from the Roman de la Rose (Vérard, ca 1500), including the Confessional, "Papelardie," Monk and vestments, Scholar instructing a woman and Phyllis, these being within double-arched removable borders as found in Bouchet Les regnars traversant les perilleuses voyes des folles fiances du mode (Vérard, ca 1503-04). The type is the same used for the Ludolphus and Bouchet. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE: the last copy sold at auction was the Brunschwig copy in 1955 according to American Book Prices Current.
