PAULINI, I (fl. 16th century). [Mythological Alphabet.] N.p., nd. [Italy: circa 1570].
Oblong 4o (143 x 197 mm.). 20 engraved plates for the letters of the alphabet, each within different grotesque border, no title issued. (Lightly mostly marginal staining.) Modern leather gilt (light rubbing to spine). Provenance: acquired from William Schatzki, 1974.
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, first issue without Paulini's name on the first plate. An alphabet of capital letters showing mostly mythological figures from Ovid's Metamorphoses, surrounded by grotesque borders. Paulini is otherwise unknown except from a copy of a print by Agostino Caracci. Complete with 20 letters on 20 plates comprising A-I, L-V and Z. Most sources call for 20 prints, though Bonacini and Thieme Becker call for 24 and Guilmard reports copies with either 20 or 24. Berlin Kat. 5279; Bonacini 1375; Guilmard p. 293.
