2o (306 x 218 mm). Title printed within woodcut scroll design, a2 with 9-line initial "A" illuminated in red, green and yellow and heightened with gold. Rubricated in red and blue. (Title stained and with old marginal repair, some marginal staining and several small marginal repairs.) 18th-century vellum-backed boards (worn). Provenance: John Mitford (signature on title); Michael Wodhull (notes on endleaves, bought by him at Pinelli auction in 1789, name cut from upper corner of endpaper indicating the sale of the book by him); Severne, Newton Hall, Cambridge (armorial bookplate); William Pickering (note on pastedown); Clifford Rattey (bookplate); acquired from Maggs Bros., 1974.
The second of three known editions of Porcia's letters. The author was a member of an important feudal family on the Venetian mainland and also published De adminisrtatione republicae Venetae, De generosa liberorum educatione and De re militari. The types in this edition were those used by Nicolò Brenta in Venice, 1507-08, and the cut on the title is the same as in his edition of Sylue de Marcello Philoxeno, Impresso, Venice, 1507.
