RABELAIS, Franois--Songes drolatiques de Pantagruel: six plates

Three leaves from: Franois Rabelais, Les Songes Drolatiques de Pantagruel

Six woodcuts printed on three sheets recto and verso, 1565, on laid paper, without watermarks, good impressions, presumably
from the first edition, published by Richard Breton, 1565, in good condition, in one mount and frame
S. 6½ x 4½ in. (165 x 115 mm.) (and smaller)

Literature:

Mortimer French 499.

The book of the Songes drolatiques consists of 120 woodcuts of grotesque figures, published without text apart from a threepage
preface. Various suggestions have been made as to the attribution of the woodcuts, ranging from Rabelais himself to
Franois des Prez. None of these suggestions could be substantiated. It has, however, been pointed out that several of the
figures are based on engravings after Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. See lot 46.
