8o (180 x 111 mm). Title printed in red and black with woodcut vignette, 103 woodcut portraits after Tobias Stimmer, one woodcut tail-piece. (A few stains, light overall browning.) Contemporary German vellum gilt, covers with double gilt fillet surrounding central ornamental tools, spine with later stamped lettering, endpapers renewed (some overall staining, curling). Provenance: Ludwig Rudolph, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1671-1735), ruler of the Wolfenbüttel subdivision (bookplate on rear pastedown); William Stirling Maxwell (bookplate on front pastedown); acquired from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1988.

FIRST GERMAN EDITION, printed in the same year and on the same press as the Latin edition. A fine collection of portraits after Tobias Stimmer, featuring many of the great figures of Reformation and renaissance Europe with an emphasis on German-speaking countries.
