Title printed in red and black, within engraved architectural border by Matheus Greuter, woodcut coat-of-arms of Julius Herzog von Braunschweig (the dedicatee), 21 (20 double-page) engraved plates (one signed by Matteus Greuter), and numerous woodcut illustrations and initials. (Some light browning and light marginal dampstaining.) Contemporary limp vellum, with supralibros and spine label added later (some darkening and soiling). Provenance: W. Tregallas (presentation label on pastedown); Royal Engineers Library (gilt stamp on binding, ink stamp on title and a few other places); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1976.

FIRST EDITION. Speckle was one of the outstanding European specialists in fortification, and his influence reaches well into the 18th century. He worked in his hometown Strassburg, Düsseldorf, Regensburg and Vienna and probably also in Hungary. His Architectura went through several editions up to the 18th century.
