8o (191 x 116 mm). Printer's device on title, numerous white-on-black woodcuts by Rudolf Manuel Deutsch. Contemporary flexible vellum gilt, ornaments partly painted in black, black ties. Provenance: Christopher Kressen (early signature on title); MKvK (bookplate with coroneted initials); Michel De Bry (bookplate; his sale Etienne Ader, Paris, 1966, lot 197); acquired from E.P. Goldschmidt, 1975.

Second edition, first published in Lyon in 1553 (see previous lot), of Strada's chronicle of the Roman emperors, illustrated with white-on-black portraits of the soverigns taken from their coinage. The cuts are close copies of the woodcuts used in the first edition. Rudolph Manuel Deutsch also cut the medallions in a similar fashion for Gesner's folio edition of 1559. Adams S-1917.
