Lot Essay

The inscription translates as Malik al-Said Muhammad Ahmad al-sheikh Idris 1302, 1302 equates to about 1884/5 AD.

The drum by repute captured in a punitive raid mounted by Lord Kitchener to avenge the murder and defeat of Gordon of Khartoum by the Mahdi in January 1885.
