A lady would need to be able to store her crinolines, dresses and lingerie and a gentleman his clothing, shirts and hats and each would need access to their belongings during extended periods of travel. Companies, such as Louis Vuitton, Goyard and Moynat catered for every possibility and the pieces below reflect the innovation of craftsmen such as these. Examples, such as the wardrobe trunk, which was made from 1875 onwards, the hat box, which was offered in a variety of sizes depending on the type and number of hats and the gentleman's vanity case, display the diversity and range of models on offer. As means of transportation and fashionable dress diversified, luggage evolved to meet its requirements, with certain models becoming more in demand than others. The wardrobe trunk became increasingly popular after the end of the century, when crinolines were abandoned and more flowing lines were adopted and the suitcase, with its ease of handling and convenience, quickly replaced more cumbersome luggage for short overnight trips by train or car. While the examples on this page allow us to relive the past, they are also a source of inspiration for the future; staples of design for the modern, distinguished traveller.
