The kings and queens representing the Turkish Ottomans versus European monarchs, the bishops as fous, the knights as horses' heads, the rooks as turrets, the pawns as soldiers
The king -- 3½ in. (9 cm.) high; the pawn -- 2½ in. (6.4cm.) high

Lot Essay

The French colonial interests lay predominately in North Africa, from the late 18th century onwards, and many sets were carved in Dieppe from this period throughout the 19th Century to illustrate the two sides.
