A CHINESE-EXPORT POLYCHROME DECORATED IVORY FIGURAL CHESS SET
CANTON, FIRST QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
Modelled as Europeans versus the Chinese, the king and queen on one side modelled as George III and Queen Charlotte, the other side modelled as Imperial rulers, the bishops as mandarins, the knights on horse back, the rooks as elephants surmounted by mahouts and turrets, the pawns as foot soldiers, refreshment to decoration
The king -- 4 3/8 in. (11 cm.) high; the pawn -- 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) high
