Following in the footsteps of his brother John, Cornelius Varley developed his skill as a landscape watercolourist by executing sketches out of doors. He travelled to Wales a number of times during the early 19th century, often with companions such as Joshua Cristall, developing his skills in depicting the rough texture of the rock surfaces in contrast to the flowing water.
