Born in Wimbledon, the youngest of the nine children of John Thomson, a London merchant engaged in trade with Russia and the Baltic, Thomson
entered the family business working in both the St Petersburg and
London offices intermittently until 1824 when he settled permanently in London and became involved in politics. A varied and ambitious career
followed, initially as MP for Dover in May 1826, and again in 1830 and 1831, and then MP for Manchester in 1834 and 1837, but also involving
roles such as President of the Board of Trade and Treasurer of the
Navy, culminating in the demanding position of Governor-in-Chief of
British North America, where he successfully negotiated the union of
Upper and Lower Canada, for which he was made Baron Sydenham on 19
August 1840.
