Ce dessin appartient à une série d'études d'animaux préparatoires au cycle décoratif de la Villa Tiepolo-Duodo Zianigo près de Venise, pour lequel Tiepolo s'inspira souvent des gravures de Stefano della Bella et Johann Elias Ridinger (voir J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, Londres 1962, pp. 42-5).
