See footnote to the previous lot. The characteristics of this jar fall into what Vincenzo de Pompeis proposed as a second stylistic grouping. The borders, ornament and portraits are particularly close to a jar in the Louvre illustrated by de Pompeis et al., ibid., p. C62 and p. C157, no. 393, and also by Jeanne Giacomotti, Catalogue des majoliques des musées nationaux, Paris, 1974, p. 64, no. 251.

The inscription on the label indicates that the original contents of this jar were probably a syrup of lemon and vinegar.
