Lot Essay

Born in Iran and based in New York, Pouran Jinchi is fascinated by the versatile shapes and forms of the Farsi and Arabic letters and numbers. With her subtle and delicate works, Jinchi captures the vitality of the sign by revealing what lies beyond its mere significance and hence surpasses the traditional form of calligraphy to reach a level of abstraction. Inspired by verses and words by poets such as Omar Khayyam or Hafez and by religious texts, Jinchi deconstruct the verses, breaks them down and manipulates them aesthetically to create a minimal, lyrical and meditative composition. The present work, a large and striking example from her Tajvid series, reveals the artists exceptional ability to combine her Persian heritage with contemporary aesthetics. Pouran Jinchis works have been exhibited internationally and are featured in important collections such as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C and the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
