Lot Essay

The knot count is approximately 9V x 9H per cm. sq.

This unusual silk rug is loosely based on Mughal prayer rug designs and relates to a part-silk Tehran rug published in 'Rugs on the Market', Hali, vol 1, no 1, Spring 1978, p.89, pl.14. In the accompanying note to the black and white image the author describes similar colours to the present example, 'vivid orange-pink and pale blue silk', and refers to the rug as 'one of the finest [early period Tehran rugs] we have seen'.
