Lot Essay

The knot count is approximately 8V x 8H per cm. sq.

Toussounian was one of the most renowned and prolific of the new generation of 'Istambouli' weavers who, inspired by the work of the Koum Kapi masters Hagop and Zareh, began working in Istanbul in the early 20th century. Toussounian was renowned for his fusion of classical designs and rather unorthodox motifs and animals drawn from his own imagination. His weavings are characterised by their vibrant colours, floppy handle and red end kilims finished with a white stripe. For further information please see Pamela Bensoussan, 'The Masterweavers of Istanbul', Hali, issue 26, April/May/June 1985, pp.34-41. A very similar rug of almost identical cartoon was sold in these Rooms, 15 April 2010, lot 166.
