Lot Essay

The present carpet with its indigo field and crimson overall pomegranate lattice, is perhaps the most iconic of the colour combinations found within the group. A similar example but with a different border design, is illustrated in Hans Bidder, Carpets from Eastern Turkestan, Tubingen, 1964 and p.53, pl.1. For a fuller note on East Turkestan carpets and the origins of the stylised pomegranate design, please refer to lot 101 in this sale.
