Lot Essay

The cartoon of the present carpet is closely related to an unusual group of Khorasan weavings known as the 'Portugese' carpets, of which one can be found in the Metropolitan Musuem of Art, (M.S.Dimand and J. Mailey, Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1973, fig.73, p.51). The design of this carpet however does not include the maritime scenes depicted within the corner spandrels of the original.
