Jugendstil Paul Scheurich - Master Modeler New York (1883 - 1945) Brandenburg Paul Scheurich was among a handful of artists credited with introducing 'The Young Style' to Germany and pertinently to the Meissen porcelain manufactory. As a burgeoning painter, graphic designer, book illustrator and skilled sculptor his work quickly proliferated the cultural scene in Berlin. As the millennium turned, his efforts focused on the theater and opera. He was an integral designer producing stage designs for Max Reinhardt and working closely with set and costume designers like Leon Bakst. At Meissen his first model was produced in 1913. In the present auction there are nineteen representative works spanning the years 1915 to 1940 (lots 315 - 323). Included are figures from Serge Diaghilev's much beloved Ballet Russe 'Karneval'. First staged in Berlin in 1912, the models are directly based on the costumes and performers of the day. His series of Moorish figures replete with exotic birds perpetuates the mood created by Giacomo Meyerbeer's 'African Lady', while the Arabian Knight picture at the right abducts us into a land of fantasy. His work proved popular and many of these models were still in production at the turn of the 21st century. In the present auction, we are fortunate to have so many representative pieces that date to the earliest period of his production. PROPERTY FROM A NEW YORK COLLECTION

This intricate form was introduced by Scheurich to the Meissen manufactory in the Spring of 1930 and the first porcelain model was completed the same year and painted in 1931. The group is known by variant titles including: the Horseman, Turk and Turk on Horseback etc. The title Entführung or Entführung aus dem Serail was used for the first time in 1937. There is no recorded connection to Mozart's opera.
