CHÂTEAU COUTET CUVÉE MADAME
Sometimes consisting of no more than two barrels (600 bottles) and never more than six (1800 bottles), this special crème-de-tête cuvée of Château Coutet, one of the only two Barsac first growths, is only produced in certain years.
It was created in 1922, the previous owner Madame Rolland-Guy's début vintage. As a gift to her, the workers picked the final day's harvest without pay, and that day's wine was kept apart and named in her honour. Before and during the war, it fell into disuse, but was revived in 1943. It is not produced every year, only when conditions allow for such a day of concentrated musts: just 17 out of the last 70 vintages.
Today it is still harvested in one day by 40 or more pickers, but comes from the same 2 hectare (4 acre) vineyard within the estate each year, composed of 55-year-old vines that have been left to super-concentrate, sometimes up to sweetness of 29 or 30 potential alcohol.
Unlike the main wine of Coutet, which incorporates 23 from Sauvignon and 2 from Muscadelle varieties, this cuvee is 100 Sémillon. The fully botrytised grapes are individually harvested by hand, then gently squeezed in a traditional vertical press and fermented in new French oak. The richness of the must makes for a very long and slow fermentation, sometimes up to 3 months, then aged in those same barrels for three years.
The wine is extraordinarily rich, honeyed and full-bodied, yet has impeccable breed, combining such power and concentration with Coutet's inimitable strain of clean-cut, tensile, vibrant and even sometimes citrus purity.
1989, 1997 and 2001 are clearly the three best vintages of the last quarter-century.
Recently removed from the reserves of Château Coutet and shipped to the Tilburg warehouse specifically for this sale. All bottles were labeled and capsuled before shipment and are in pristine condition.
Offered in original wooden cases of 6 bottles.
Château Coutet Cuvée Madame--Vintage 1989
Barsac, 1er cru classé
1989 Still smothered by its extraordinary richness, the impression
of sheer sweetness is beautifully balanced by classic Coutet flavours of citrus and spring flower freshness, resulting, despite its enormous concentration, in exquisite harmony, now further complexified by age.
Ready now but will be fine for another 10 year. BB
