These reliefs evoke Roman virtues with one depicting Lucretia; and the other recalling the steadfastness of the legendary Roman hero Coriolanus on his departure from Rome. They were invented by Jean Guillaume Moitte (1746-1810) in 1789 , and engraved in 1795 by Jean-François Janinet (d.1810) (see G. Gramaccini, Jean-Guillaume Moitte, Berlin vol. II , 1993 fig 242). A pair of bas-reliefs from the same series by Janinet, was sold anonymously, Christie's, Paris, 17 October 2007, lot 12.
