This wardrobe, in it's untouched and lightly waxed original condition is typical of the restrained and elegant Bedroom furniture much favoured by Lorimer and made for him by the renowned Edinburgh Cabinet-Makers Whytock and Reid with whom the architect enjoyed a long and fruitful association.
Lorimer believed passionately that wood should tell it's own story. In his words, he took a good design and made his own comments upon it, thereby creating a sweet-smelling thing fit to last a few hundred years. He chose sober 18th century designs as interpreted and exemplified by the present wardrobe, which is inspired by early 18th century pieces, and by the Bedroom Furniture supplied to Monzie Castle, Perthshire which he rebuilt and refurnished in 19O9 following a disastrous fire.
