By the mid to late sixties, Derek Jarman was experimenting with the picture-plane to the extent of inventing oddly-shaped frames, often triangular, designed to emphasise the perspective. In the placing of those framed works within traditionally shaped frames (in both the present lot and lot 272, the white painted frames are Jarman's originals) the idea of bringing a new, radical intensity to a figurative scene echoes his conversations with contemporaries such as Keith Milow, Duggie Fields and David Hockney.

We are grateful to Mr. Richard Salmon for the information he has kindly provided for the catalogue.
