Probably grey schist, of rectangular form, the central field carved with cusped arch at top, inscribed with seven lines of angular kufic script, the two upper corners restored, set within wooden panel

Lot Essay

The inscription in kufic script reads:
bismillah hadha qabar/al-sayyid al-shahid Sa'id/bin 'Umar bin Abi al-Qasim/al-Najjar (?) bi-rahma Allah/tuwuffiya fi ghura shahr/rabi' al-akhar sana tis'/wa talathin wa khamsami'a

In the name of God, this is the tomb of the noble the late (martyr) Sa'id bin 'Umar bin Abu al-Qasim al-Najjar (the Carpenter) Allah be merciful, (he) passed away in the month of Rabi' II in the year of 539
