Lot Essay

Iznik hanging ovoid ornaments such as the present example can be found as early as 1480-1490 with similar blue and white decoration. They are commonly associated with mosque lamps and are hung above the lamp, on the suspension chain. For other vessels from the same blue and white series, dated to circa 1575-1580 see Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Yanni Petsopoulos ed., Iznik, London, 1994, cat.755-759.
