A new Dictionary of Natural History; or, compleat universal display of animated nature. London: Harrison & Co., 1785. 2 vols, 2° (371 x 239mm). 100 hand-coloured engraved plates, titles printed in red and black. (Half-titles lacking, occasional light damp stain to vol. II, touching on outer margin of 17 plates and approximately 75 leaves of text, including title-page; three plates approx. 5mm shorter, their paper lightly browned). Handsome contemporary tree calf, spines richly gilt in compartments, original red and green morocco labels preserved (corners bumped, hinges strengthened with tape). Provenance: Catherine Stiell, ownership inscriptioin dated June 1796, to upper margin of title pages; with inscriptions bequeathing the two volumes to her niece Caroline Stuart to the recto of the blank leaf preceding the title, dated 25th August, 1822.
