Stuttgart: Krais & Hoffmann, 1851. 2 volumes, oblong 4° (272 x 335mm). 39 hand-coloured lithographic maps and charts (plus a duplicate of plate 6) and 3 steel-engraved plates each with multiple images, text volume in triple columns. (Some light spotting throughout both vols, first 36pp of text volume cockled.) Contemporary European-style green half-calf, spines gilt, marbled boards (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Swiss ownership signature to front free endpapers, paper library label to spines.

'ONE OF THE LAST REALLY COMPREHENSIVE PHYSICAL SURVEYS EVER TO BE ATTEMPTED' (PMM). The Atlas, with plates by Traucott Bromme, was published as a companion volume to Humboldt's Kosmos, a survey of contemporary knowledge of the physical world, which occupied him for the last three decades of his life.
