Stuttgart: Krais & Hoffmann, 1851. 2 volumes, oblong 4° (272 x 335mm). 39 hand-coloured lithographic maps and charts (plus a duplicate of plate 6) and 3 steel-engraved plates each with multiple images, text volume in triple columns. (Some light spotting throughout both vols, first 36pp of text volume cockled.) Contemporary European-style green half-calf, spines gilt, marbled boards (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Swiss ownership signature to front free endpapers, paper library label to spines.

The Atlas, with plates by Traucott Bromme, was published as a companion volume to Humboldt's Kosmos, a survey of contemporary knowledge of the physical world, which occupied him for the last three decades of his life.
