A Collection of Voyages. In four volumes. London: James and John Knapton, 1729. 4 vols. 8° (198 x 121mm). Sixty-three engraved maps and plates, many folding, engraved tail-pieces throughout, with title-pages to the seventh edition of Dampier's A New Voyage round the World and the third edition of A Voyage to New-Holland in vols one and three respectively. (Occasional light browning, small nick to margin of one plate, fore-margin of one map cropped.) Handsome unsophisticated contemporary mottled calf, spines richly gilt in compartments, with red and green morocco labels, these lettered in gilt (head- and tail-cap to vol. I chipped, head-cap of vol. III chipped with slight loss, other spine ends rubbed, joints cracked but firm). Provenance: Richard Malone, Lord Sunderlin, his bookplate to the front pastedowns.
A PARTICULARLY HANDSOME SET OF THE COLLECTED EDITION OF DAMPIER'S VOYAGES: 'generally considered the best' (Sabin), including the narratives of Wafer, Sharp, Wood, Funnel and Hacke. Dampier himself was at once explorer, adventurer and pirate. Often referred to as the 'precursor to Banks and Darwin in his keen observations' and an 'indefatigable navigator' he was the first English navigator to record and collect natural history, and survived shipwreck, desertion and imprisonment. He made an unprecedented three circumnavigations of the globe and was the first person to correctly describe the winds and currents in the Pacific Ocean. His stated aim was discovery, not Spanish gold, and his voyages took him to the West Indies, Virginia, Mexico, the Philippines, China and Australia where, in 1688, he made the first English landing on that continent. It was his descriptions of the aborigines at King Sound which probably inspired Swift's 'Yahoos' in Gulliver's Travels. Hill 422; Sabin 18373; cf. Borba de Moraes I, pp242-244. (4)
