FIRST EDITIONS OF THE OFFICIAL NARRATIVE OF THE FIRST AUSTRIAN CIRCUMNAVIGATION and the account of the senior geologist, with four other illustrated scientific volumes relating to the voyage. The most ambitious enterprise ever undertaken by the Austrian navy this was, 'bibliographically speaking, the last great scientific expedition of the nineteenth century' (Borba). During its circumnavigation the Novara visited, amongst other places, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape of Good Hope, Sydney, Tahiti, Valparaiso, Hong Kong, Singapore, Java, Manila, and Shanghai. The team of seven scientists on board were led by Scherzer, who compiled the three volume official narrative of the voyage and who was himself in charge of collections in the fields of ethnography, linguistics, anthropology and statistics.
